A rare Haida argillite figural group dating from the mid 1800’s. Finely carved with excellent sculptural detail, the carving features multiple intertwined crest figures. The imagery on the is piece is outstanding and features creatures rarely represented in argillite sculpture. The design is split in two and fully carved in the round. Raven and bear on one side, on the end a salmon split between face with closed eyes, bear embracing a mountain goat ( the one with horns) and a shaman on his back, finally with a whale wrapped around bottom to the backside. an amazing amount of detail and creativity. A museum quality example worthy of the finest collections.
