Haida Argillite Totem
Artist: Captain Andrew Brown (1879-1962)
Captain Andrew Brown was born in 1879. In Haida his name was Owt’iwans which meant ‘Big Eagle.’ He inherited this name from his grandfather who came from small Hippa Island. Andrew himself came from Yan. He carved many great canoes, earning him the nickname ‘Captain,’ which he put in front of his English given name.. He passed away in 1962 at the age of 83.

Description: A very fine early argillite totem. Totem features great well carved imagery from the prime of Andrew’s career. An eagle sits with head turned to one side , sitting on a diving whale, who holds a diving raven in his beak and at the bottom a bear clutches a small baby bear.
