A very rare Northwest Coast Tlingit hand carved and painted cedar model totem pole circa 1910-20. The totem is attributed to Tlingit master carver James Watson (1890-1930) . The totem features great well carved and painted imagery featuring human bear like creatures pulling on the tentacle of an octopus. Painted in great old original pigments of red, black and blue-green pigments.  This is a very early hollow back totem pole that never had a separate carved attached base. The totem has a great aged patina and is of museum quality. Reference Carvings and Commerce by Michael Hall and Pat Glascock  page 87 illustration #43 for another example of this carvers work. His work rarely if ever comes up on the market for sale.
