Description
A collection of Four Carved Northern wooden feast spoons
Artist: Tlingit or Haida
Date: 19th Century
Materials: Wood, alder and natural and trade pigments and black and red.
Dimensions: lengths range from 12-1/4 inches to 8 inches.
Description: Group of 4, three painted with traditional crest designs in black and red. The dark graceful unpainted one shows lots of evidence of use with a nice rich oily patina. The skill to make what seems like a simple spoon is a complex task. The tree needs to be trained to be the right shape before harvesting and careful respect to the grain and knots need to be thought out and then carved thinly so as to be sturdy , light and functional.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of Paul Singer, Brooklyn, New York
