Description: A well carved early totem pole featuring a eagle, raven and bear with a human face peering out between his knees. This hand carved and painted cedar totem pole dates 1908. The totem is a nice large substantial thick totem with great presence. It is in excellent well preserved original condition, with a nice soft patina from great age and careful handling. This carver worked out of the Seattle area and a photograph showing totems by this carver appear in an early 1915 photograph taken at the Ye Olde Curiosity Shop (please see Kate Duncan’s book 1001 Curious Things page 173 ). The totem fourth over on the far left #5 has many features identical to this one.
Interesting imagery of a Human on the top followed by a owl? Whose legs stand on a wolf head, shaman holding a transverse whale at bottom. Fine original condition and original paints. :inscribed verso: “Wrangle Alaska totem / TYY / H. Labisky / Dec. 25/1908”
The Ye Olde Curiosity shop has been operating since 1899 in downtown Seattle. The totem is in excellent original condition with original paints and no restorations. This totem will make a great addition to anyone’s collection.
