Argillite figural Canoe Sculpture

Artist: Ron Gitsgah Wilson (b1945-), Haida

Ron Gitsgah Wilson whose primary focus is argillite, takes inspiration from other esteemed Haida Carvers such as Tim Pearson, Arthur Moody, Ike Hans and Gordon Cross.  He attended the Vancouver School of Art  from 1967-1969 and furthered developed his skills by studying wood carving with Henry Hunt Sr.  Ron is a part of the Stau’aas Xaadaga clan and is next in line to become Chief Cumshewa.

Description: Complex figural group in a canoe . Imagery includes salmon, octopus wrapping around a human, raven and bear eating a human. I love the way the artist has taken a panel pipe form from earlier times and added his own originality. The figures are complex and intertwined in a most pleasing arrangement.
