A rare early Haida shamans amulet dating from the mid 1800’s. Carved from antler or bone the image depicts a Euro American captain or sailor. These type of figures appeared on early Haida pipes and individual figures done in argillite. Drilled for suspension. Great patina and old museum collection number on the bottom. De-accessioned from the Francis and Charles Rief collection. The Rief collection of argillite is held at the Royal BC museum in Victoria and was the basis for the book Magic Leaves.
