A very Haida powder measure dating from the very early 1800’s. Finely carved with dogfish(shark) and wolf design from mountain goat horn, red ocher pigments remains in the cracks, with a wood plug at bottom.Embellished with the crest of the owner this rare carving would have been used for carrying black powder. Only the wealthiest natives (chiefs) would have had a luxury of a trade musket at the time. I have never seen another one of these on the open market. This museum quality example will make a fine addition to anyone’s collection.
